Olympian Deriba Merga ran the Delhi Half marathon in 59.15 minutes to set a new meet record. In the process he emerged as the fastest half marathin runner this year. He won the top prize of 25000 dollars. Kenyans Wilson Kipsang and Wilson Chebet finished 2nd and 3rd. Their timings were 59.16 and 59.34 minutes respectively. They took home 15,000 and 10,000 dollards respectively.
In the Women’s section Aselefech Mergia won with a time of 68.17 minutes to take home 25000 dollars. Among the Indians Sandeep Kumar was the best clocking 64.53 and he took home 4000 dollars while Kashinath and Deep Chand finished 2nd the 3rd in the Indian Men’s section. In the Indian Womens section Preethi L Rao and Sudha Singh came in 2nd and third to take home 3000 and 2000 dollars respectively.
The question here is, why have seperate sections for Indians. Do we need a seperate section because the Indian Authorities think that our runners arent capable of matching foriegners in the marathin races ?
