Nursery of Olympic prospects has just 10 athletes in CYG

October 13, 2008

Set up with the aim to become the nursery of Indian Olympic prospects, the Army Sports Institute (ASI) here has just 10 representations among the 158-member strong Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Youth Games which started today.

Strange as it may sound, the ASI, which officially came into being in September 2005 with motto “To Win Olympic Medals for India and We Will” does not have representations in athletics, in which India fielded the maximum — 55 athletes.

It has six boxers, three weightlifters and one wrestler in the Indian contingent.

The CYG, which is the “trial games” for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, offers a platform to the future prospects for India but the poor representation from ASI, which has set eyes on 2012 London Olympics, might sound surprising.

But ASI commandant Col. Satpal Ahlawat chose to differ.

According to him, their junior athletics programme only began in July 2006. “We picked the juniors, in the age group of below 14 years, only in July 2006. So we did not have the boys in that particular age group of 18 as stipulated by the Games federation… By next year, our boys will graduate to that category,” Ahlawat told PTI.

“Our representation may be less but all the boys we have fielded are good medal prospects. You can at least hope for four to five gold medals from them. T. Nanao Singh (48kg) is a definite prospect for a gold in boxing … In wrestling, Ajit Patil (42kg) is favourite as I don’t think there would be much competition for him in his light weight category…” “Yukar Sibi (62kg) and Anupdeo Toppo (77kg) start favourites in weightlifting … I expect all of our athletes to come out with medals,” Ahlawat added.

CYG 2008 Pune

October 1, 2008

Here is another sporting extravaganza that is happening in India. The Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 will be held at Pune from 12th of October to the 18th of October. There is also a site that will give you more details about the event as well as various disciplines that are being held.

Here is what the site had to say about the games.
The III Commonwealth Youth Games will be hosted by Pune from 12 to 18 October 2008 at the magnificent Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi. The notable feature of this event is that the competition venues of all sports events and the Athletes Village are located in one single complex.

The sports city is located 12 KM away from Pune railway station and 22 KM from the airport, on the Mumbai- Pune highway. It occupies an area of 153 acres of well laid out sports venues with world class competition and training facilities. An Athletes Village with modern facilities is also located within the venue.

The main Athletics stadium has a seating capacity of 20,000 and will be the venue for the Opening and Closing ceremonies.

The Sports City has 5 indoor (Badminton, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Boxing) and 4 outdoor (Athletics, Tennis, Swimming and Shooting) venues. The Shooting Range including Trap & Skeet will be the best in the country. All the venues are provided with modern electronic scoring and timing equipment. Each venue also caters for a separate practice and warm up area.

The Athletes Village can house 1800 athletes and team officials and is equipped with the most modern facilities to cater to the comfort of the athletes.

In anticipation of large and enthusiastic crowds, adequate parking space of approximately 25 acres is being developed outside the Sports City.

The Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 will include a total of 9 disciplines:
Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling.
